Workshop #2

Sports Leaders and Employer Mentors were invited for the second workshop.

In this Workshop held at Pamukkale University on the 13th of October 2018, entitled ‘Career Planning in Sports and Meeting with Mentors’, the following main objectives were outlined by Asoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Mülazımoğlu Ballı;

  • Introduction, information and discussion on the employer mentor scheme. 

  • The skills, attributes and personal factors employers are looking for in graduates, particularly sports graduates.

  • The job market in sport, finding a job, writing a CV and a covering letter.

  • Personal reflections on the skills, knowledge, personal factors and wider graduate attributes were discussed, and how to develop an action plan to develop personal and professional factors. 

Mentor scheme points were;

  • Meet in person with undergraduate students on a one to one basis for certain aspects of the programed. 

  • Meet as a small group with 2/3 of the students after 2nd workshop to discuss generic aspects,

  • The students would maintain communication with the employer monthly to update them on their progress of their action plan. 

  • Students would visit the employers on-site to gain an induction into their workplace. 

  • Employers would carry out a mock interview with students on a one to one basis during one of the visits. 

  • On-going support provided by employers would be via e-mail, skype and face: face visit. 

16 Sport leaders, 5 mentors, 1 Head of Triathlon Federation and 1 Human Resources Management expert participated in this workshop.

  • Soft Skills , Emotional İntelligence and Employability : By Dr. Ömür Dugan

  • First Activity: What qualities does the sport sector look for in graduates?  

After the discussion groups the results were as follows;  Trustworthiness, Reliability, Expressing abilities, Self-confidence, Communication Skills, Energetic, Knowledge on the field, Personal Hygiene, Able to solve problems and manage crisis, Good time management, Team work, Visionary. 

  • Second Activity: How can sport leaders develop their social skills?

After the discussion groups the results were as follows;  Knowing yourself, valuing yourself , overcoming fears, intellectual intelligence, being open to communication, being a good observer.

  • Third Activity: Discussing which sport activities can be suitable to select in ESLP.

After the discussion groups the results were as follows;  Rec-Fit , Outdoor , Ball Games, Dance, Martial Arts

  • Mentors and sport leaders were matched.

  • Formal permissions were taken from the vice rector of university for using the facilities and supporting the sport coaches.
